Document management and digital printer manufacturer Océ has
seen a strong growth in demand for second-hand printing systems.
The Dutch company sold around 5,000 renovated systems in 2008, an
increase of some 60 percent on the approximately 3,000 printers
sold in 2007.

Ed Hudson, marketing manager at Océ UK, said that “over 90
percent” of these refurbished second-hand printers were being
financed, rather than purchased outright.

Océ has a global financing agreement with De Lage Landen, which
has a team dedicated to the manufacturer’s sales.

The second-hand systems are typically three-to-five years old
and fully refurbished – and Océ guarantees quality levels that are
identical to those of a new printer.

“For 30 years we have been systematically stepping up our re-use
of materials in renovated printers,” said Rokus van Iperen,
chairman of the board of executive directors at Océ. “In the
current market, we see increasing customer acceptance of procuring
a printer embarking on a second life.”

Last year, the company introduced Océ Prémia Class, a quality
label offering re-used printing systems globally.

The re-used printers come from Océ’s asset recovery plans,
located in Venlo, Netherlands; Chicago, USA; Munich, Germany; and
Prague, Czech Republic. Collectively, these plants supplied 5,000
renovated printing systems and 130,000 components and modules in
2008.
