Hill Hire, part of the Bank of Scotland Corporate, has won three
significant deals with a total value of around £1.5m.

One involves a five-year, fullcontract hire agreement with
Constellation Europe, one of the largest drinks companies in
Europe. The deal consists of the provision of Pillarless triaxle
curtainsiders, which will be used to transport cider and wine
between factory and retailers.

lA new agreement with global logistic company Bullet Express
consists of the provision of six tri-axle curtainside trailers on a
five-year contract-hire offer.This extends a long-term relationship
with Hill Hire, which currently provides Bullet Express with its
entire fleet.

The third deal is with Stewarts, of Tayside, which grows and
packs swede and fruit in Scotland. This is for 14, 13.6 metre
Schmitz Fridge units with a carrier Vector 1850 refrigeration unit.
The five-year contract sees Hill Hire provide a further five
trailers within the agreement that will be used to transport
produce all over the UK.

The company’s fleet includes 20,500 vehicles, ranging from 3.5tn
panel vans to 44tn topweight trucks, including refrigerated
trailers. It buys around 1,000 vehicles a year.

Like other major commercial vehicle lessors, Hill Hire suffered
during 2006 from a highly competitive marketplace and
correspondingly tight margins.

The situation eased during 2007, but Andy Mitchell, Hill Hire’s
managing director, believes there is no room for complacency. In
the past, Mitchell has been a stern critic of the tendency of some
players in the sector to cut margins and buy business.

“This industry,” he said, “has needed to take stock and set its
prices commensurate to the value of the service it offers. The
assets used in the industry do not come cheap and, if prices and
costs continue rising, then this has to be realistically mirrored
in the price for the job.”

Hill Hire has 17 depots spread around the UK, each with a team
of trained and accredited engineers. The company planned to open a
further depot in Hull in July.
