A year-on-year rise of 22.3% in vans meant that total commercial vehicle registrations grew 11.9% overall in August, according to figures released by The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

In total 12,652 vans were sold in August, bringing the total amount sold for the year to the end of August rose to 192,948, 19.1% higher than in the same period last year.

Truck sales continued to stall following the rush in late 2013 for pre-Euro-6 vehicles. As a result, truck sales in August were 22.7% lower than in August 2013, at 2,401. Year-to-date figures present a similar story, down 22% year-on-year to 22,011.

This left overall commercial sales at 15,053 in August, 11.9% above the comparative 2013 figure, and 13% above 2013 for the 8 months to the end of August, at 214,959.

Mike Hawes, chief executive officer of SMMT said; "Strong van registrations have led to another month of continued growth for the commercial vehicle market, with the demand for light commercial vehicles continuing to build.
