Leaseurope’s annual convention in Prague was a firm success,
prompting industry discussion as vigorous as ever despite
abridgement to a one day academic programme.

But having attended the networking events and watched the
presentations, one could be forgiven for thinking that European
leasing ended at Calais.

France, Germany, Iberia, Italy, Scandinavia, the CIS and the CEE
regions were brilliantly represented and covered. But where was the
UK leasing industry?

Out of some 330 participants attracted to the event from 33
European countries, less than 10 percent hailed from the British
Isles.

Of this contingent, most delegates were either representing the
UK’s excellent battery of service providers, or writing for a
leasing magazine.

In fact, there were virtually no extant British leasing
practitioners to be seen, especially after John Bennett had to
cancel his attendance after an altercation with a horse.

With more than 170 CEOs, MDs and board members showing up from
mainland networks, it was not as if UK business leaders would have
been lonely.

And they would not have been bored, either. Whereas the
strategic focus of last year’s event in Madrid was overshadowed by
the onset of the financial crisis, no such anxiety was present this
time around.

Presentations were geared towards long term strategy, and the
prime topic of the day was not how to mitigate extreme damage to
operational models, but how to align business strategy to the start
of a continental recovery.

Besides, the food was excellent.

Leaseurope’s 2010 Convention will be held on 30 September
and 1 October in Hamburg, Germany. Even with recessionary travel
restrictions taken into account, one would have thought at least a
handful of senior figures could make it over from the UK. To start
the ball rolling, easyJet.com is offering return tickets from £45.
Leasing Life will see you there.
