Ene

Current job:
Vice-president of IBM Global Financing

What was your first ever
job?
During my university time in Bucharest, I started to
work as a computer programmer under the communist regime for the
Ministry of Procurement in Romania.

Where is the best place
to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the
office?
Sametime: it’s the internal instant messaging
system we use in IBM. In the world of today when work is done
virtually from anywhere, the internal messaging system is the
modern version of corridor or water cooler chats. You send a short
‘good morning’ message to someone in a far country in another line
of business and find out instantly how he/she feels that day, how
business is going and of course the gossip.

What’s your favourite
restaurant?
Al Porto in Milan. This is the restaurant
where I have never used the menu, because Paolo would welcome me
with a wonderful smile and immediately working out my mood would
recommend what wine and fish he serves. Every evening is simply
great!

What do you do at
weekends?
Gardening, cooking, listening to music and
hiking in the forest near my home.

Who is your mentor or
role model?
During my career, I had great mentors inside
the company from whom I learned a lot. As for a role model, while
there are many personalities I admire – John Lennon and Nelson
Mandela making the top of the list – I am trying to be
myself.

What’s one of the best
things about your job?
The people. IBMers are defined by
their passion. We’re one of the few companies where employees
identify themselves by the company name – here you’re not just an
IBM employee, you’re an IBMer. There’s no question that our culture
prizes intelligence and innovation. IBMers, by nature of whom we
hire, are naturally smart people motivated by high achievement.
Here you really are working with the best and the brightest people.
Historically and today, IBM succeeds by inventing, improving, and
implementing products that change the world: smarter modes of
commerce: better and smarter ways for children to learn: improved
quality of life. It’s more than a way to profitability – it’s a way
of life for us, our passion.

If you weren’t in your
current job, what would you have been?
A farmer somewhere
in Africa.

What’s your biggest
work/career mistake?
I haven’t made it yet, but I know I
will!

What cars do you
drive?
BMWs. I love these cars and have been buying
various models for many years

What book are you
currently reading?
I normally have several books open.
Today, the Churchill Memoirs, La Bella Lingua and
The Next 100 Years.

What’s on your CD player or MP3 player at the
moment?
I have enough to satisfy any mood from classical
and the 1960s, to Ramazzotti and the latest Eminem featuring
Rihanna.
