Eight companies have indicated
their interest in creating a wind energy development off the coast
of Maryland, US.

All are hoping to lease a site
12 miles or more into the Atlantic Ocean. The winning bidder will
have to go through an extensive environmental impact study before
work can begin.

Potential wind developers were
invited in November 2010 to express interest in leasing sites in a
207 nautical square mile area.

Officials claim that there has
been a robust response to the federal government’s call for
developers to show interest in generating electricity from wind
turbines in the Atlantic. More leases to wind energy projects are
expected to be awarded by the end of this year or early in
2012.
