The UK law firm Shoosmiths has assisted Hitachi Rail Europe
(HRE) secure a £4.5bn (€5.7bn)
governmentcontract to build and service of 596 rail carriages
Beside a fleet of 92 new intercity trains,
the 30-year deal, approved by UK Transport
Secretary Justine
Greening, will see
up to 900 new jobs created.
HRE owns 70% of rail consortium and rolling stock
lessor Agility
Trains, which will subcontract the manufacturing of the electric and bi-mode
trains under
the Intercity
Express Programme to replace Britain’s diesel fleet.
Chris McClure, partner and head of rail
projects at Shoosmiths, said the level of investment and commitment
being demonstrated by HRE “is a massive boost to the UK economy,
and we’re proud and delighted to be playing a part in that.”
The HRE factory will be built at Newton
Aycliffe, County Durham in the country’s North East
and the fleet is scheduled to begin service on the Great Western
Main Line in 2017.
