GE Capital has appointed Elmar Lukas as managing director for its equipment financing division in EMEA. Lukas will oversee GE Capitals future leasing and asset finance strategy across the region He will report into Isabel Fernandez, chief commercial officer for GE Capital in EMEA.
FLA warns on lease accounting
TheFLA has warned that UK listed companies could see a hike in the value of their assets and liabilities if the new lease accounting rules are adopted. The proposed rules mean that assets and liabilities for listed companies would rise on average by £463m most of which would be for property leases at £445m, and the remaining for non-property leases (£18m).

A white paper published by the leasing specialist claimed that the public sector should take lessons from the private sector if it wants to save money on fleet. Outsourcing fleet management, and using video conferencing, were also suggested as cost cutting measures to help the public sector cope with sharp cuts to budgets introduced by the governments comprehensive spending review last week.
Bank levy a nuisance
Leasing subsidiaries of UK banks are likely to find the governments new levy a nuisance, but not a significant burden on their business. At 0.04% of a banks total balance sheet, the levy is expected to generate £1.1bn (1.2bn) for the exchequer in 2011

Leasing thrives in Italian banks
The Italian leasing arms of Socit Gnrale, Crdit Agricole and BNP Paribas are increasing new business origination through the banking channel, embracing a model typical of Italys largest lessors, including UniCredit Leasing and Leasint. BNP Paribas Lease Group (BPLG) Italia is strengthening its Bank Leasing Services unit thanks to an agreement last year with Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL), the Italian bank acquired by BPN Paribas in 2006

Banks levied to tune of £2.5bn
The UK government has introduced a £2.5bn annual bank levy, designed to encourage less risky funding and complementing the wider agenda to enhance financial stability. The levy will apply to all UK banks and to the more than 200 overseas banks operating in the UK. The British Banking Association (BBA) said that UK banks are committed to playing their part in restoring the UK economy and that includes helping to meet the greater demands on the Exchequer.
