West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust (WMAS) has partnered with asset finance company De Lage Landen (DLL) to repurpose its decommissioned ambulances, aligning with its sustainability goals and supporting the NHS’s broader net-zero targets.
As part of its fleet management strategy, WMAS sought an economical and sustainable solution for vehicles at the end of their service life. Following a formal procurement process, which emphasised quality, price, and environmental considerations, DLL was selected for its extensive experience in ambulance remarketing and commitment to sustainability.
Under the agreement, DLL will act as an agent to repurpose and sell WMAS’s retired ambulances, giving them a second life with private ambulance operators across the UK. This approach not only reduces waste and environmental impact but also generates additional income for WMAS, which can be reinvested into patient care.
Tony Page, Head of Fleet & Facilities Management at WMAS, praised the partnership, stating: “We have worked together for many years in the financing and management of our ambulance fleet. DLL has always delivered a high level of service, especially when we return vehicles at the end of their lease. Their experience and proven process for repurposing decommissioned vehicles make them the perfect partner for WMAS.”
Supporting NHS net-zero goals
The NHS has set ambitious sustainability targets, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions for activities under its control by 2040. As part of this mission, WMAS is integrating environmentally responsible practices into its operations, including fleet management. The partnership with DLL supports these goals by promoting a circular economy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and extending the lifecycle of emergency vehicles.
Stephen Richards, DLL’s Head of Global Asset Sales, highlighted the benefits of the collaboration: “Our financial products aid organisations like the NHS by distributing energy-efficient equipment and enabling the repurposing of used assets. This minimises waste and provides functional, affordable vehicles at a low environmental cost.”
