George Acris,
head of European business development,
Microlease
Name: George
Acris
Current job: Head of
European business development at
Microlease
What was your first
job? I was a driver delivery man for my local TV and radio
station GBC, in Gibraltar – my home country. In my student days I
was also a production runner on the Bond film Living Daylights –
that was tremendous fun.
Tell us about your
career? I have worked in various roles across marketing
and business development for Microlease since joining the company
in 1997.
Prior to that, I spent seven
years in the logistics industry, for TNT Express Worldwide, working
in both the commercial and marketing departments.

By GlobalDataWhere is the best
place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the
office? I’m usually the last person to find out the office
gossip so I guess that means I don’t know! You’ll occasionally
catch me down in dispatch, ribbing one of my colleagues about the
state of their team.
What time do you
usually leave the office? I’m very rarely in one place as
I travel frequently in Europe, but when I’m in this country I
generally finish between 7pm and 7.30pm.
What’s your favourite
restaurant? The Chiringuito (literally Little Beach Hut),
in Alcaidesa Beach, near Gibraltar. It’s simple and they barbecue
fresh sardines and bream straight off the boat.
Also Bianca’s in Gibraltar
has the best atmosphere.
What do you do at
weekends? I spend most of my weekends on windy, muddy
fields watching and supporting my two young sons playing football
for the local team.
Who is your mentor or
role model? It’s Microlease CEO Nigel Brown, who is an
inspiration to me and to most people in the business.
He leads by example, he has
an incredibly strategic mind and is also a very thoughtful person.
Outside of the business, Clive Woodward is a great speaker and very
motivational.
If you weren’t in
your current job, what would you have been? My dream job
would have been in the music industry, as a producer or even a
songwriter. I’m not very good, but I do pick up a guitar every now
and then and have the occasional strum.
What’s your biggest
work/career mistake? Probably working too late and not
allowing enough time to recharge my batteries.
What cars do you
drive? I drive a BMW – great residual value so therefore
good to lease.
What book are you
currently reading? The book I’ve just finished and one
that I thoroughly enjoyed is You’ll Win Nothing With Kids –
Fathers, Sons and Football, by Jim White.
Anyone who’s ever gone to
watch kids football will identify with it. It’s very well written,
extremely funny and close to the bone.
What’s on your CD player or MP3 player at the
moment? All sorts of obscure stuff which reflects my
background, from Spanish bands Ketama and Taxi to Jamiroquai’s
latest.
