In June, the EU market for new commercial vehicles expanded the tenth consecutive month with new registrations up 10.3% from the month before to a total of 166,107 units, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA).
The June figures conclude a 9.3% rise of new commercial vehicles registrations in the first half of this year when 912,722 cars were registered overall, compared to 834,914 units in the same period 2013.
In June, the commercial vehicle market grew in Germany (+6.5%) and Italy (+8.6%) with UK (+25.5%) and Spain (+18.9%) reporting double-digit year-on-year performance. Portugal’s registrations were up 61.1% to top the list while the commercial vehicle market in Croatia (-25.2) and Poland (-14.2) shrunk the most.
During the first half year of 2014, Spain witnessed the highest growth level (+38%) of all major EU economies. The Italy market rose by 13.6%, followed by UK (+11.1%), Germany (+8.3%) and France (+0.4%).
Light and heavy commercial vehicles
Demand for new vans (defined as light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes) increased by 13.1% in the EU, counting 140,511 new registrations. The UK market grew 33.3% from the year before.

By GlobalDataBetween January and June 2014, 761,521 vans were registered in the EU. All major markets saw their demand increase, from +1.5% in France to +7.3% in Germany, +15.0% in Italy, +16.8% in the UK and +39.0% in Spain.
Within the heavy-trucks segment (vehicles excluding buses and coaches and exceeding 16 tonnes), the market remained stable (-0.7%) in June, with 17,692 new registrations, but France (-15.2%) and the UK faced a downturn while Germany (+21.0%) and Spain (+37.1%) posted double-digit growths.
Over six months, the region registered 5.7% more heavy-trucks than in the same period last year and counted 105,405 new heavy trucks. France (-6.7%) and the UK (-26.5%) performed less well than in the first half-year of 2013, while the Italian (+15.4%), German (+19.4%) and Spanish (+41.4%) markets expanded.
Among commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes excluding buses and coaches (trucks), 22,258 units were registered in June, a 4.2% decline. The markets in Italy (-3.8%), France (-15.8%) and the UK (-18.3%) shrunk, but Germany (+7.4%) and Spain (+22.1%) registered more trucks than in the same month last year.
Truck, bus and coach registrations
In the first half of 2014, truck registrations expanded by 1.6% year-on-year to 135,358 new vehicles. Italy, Germany and Spain markets all rose by 4.5%, 10.4% and 34.3% each, while France and the UK fell by 8.4% and 25.9%, respectively.
Demand for buses and coaches exceeding 3.5 tonnes were up 8.5% overall in June 2014 compared to the year previous, with a total of 2,739 units. Among the three most significant markets, Germany was the only one to post growth (+14.3%) while the UK (-4.8%) and France (-18.3%) declined.
During the first six months of 2014, the segment grew 7.3% compared to the same period of 2014, with a total of 15,843 recorded registrations. Markets in the UK (+3.0) and Germany (+11.5%) both grew, but France’s new bus and coach registrations contracted by 2.9% year-on-year.
